Q.No.24: Why does aqua regia dissolve gold ??

Reasoning Question Series
Q.No.24: Why does aqua regia dissolve gold ??
Ans:
1.it is due to oxidation process which occurs with strong oxidizing agent
2. Aqua Regia has Conc, HNO3 and HCl in 1:3 ratio,
3.Aqua Regia is very powerful and can dissolve gold within minutes.
4.That's because the HNO3 and the HCl in it act together.
5.The Nitric acid converts a tiny amount of gold metal to gold ions.
6.These ions react immediately with the chloride ions from the hydrochloric acid.
7This causes even more gold atoms to turn into gold ions, and the reaction speeds up
8. Reaction
HNO3 + 3HCl---------------> NOCl+Cl2+2H20
NOCl-------------------------> NO+ [Cl]
